Author: Unknown Date Published: 31 December 2012 Date Accessed: 1/23/13
Summary of the Article
Political turmoil and merciless military domination have persisted for decades in Burma. Rohingyas are a religious/linguistic minority from western Burma. These Rohingya migrants have fled to Malaysia to avoid deadly clashes and altercations that have arisen in Burma, to save themselves, their family, and their people. This boat journey is one of the two decisions that these Rohingya migrants can make: to either endure a journey across the sea to Malaysia, or to hide out in Bangladesh- risking the chance of facing persecution and capture.
Thoughts, Emotions, and Observations about the Article
This article was very heart sickening to read and try to grasp. If I had to flee my home country due to violence and military domination, I would be at a total loss for words. Picture yourself, leaving everything that you call home, not just your house, but your own country for another foreign country Malaysia has yet to recognize these refugees. However, Burma's political structure is rapidly collapsing, and the citizens of Burma need to escape to safety for their own sake.
How This Relates to Politics
These Rohingya migrants who have arrived in Malaysia were apart of human trafficking, which is a very serious and problematic issue regarding humans of any age, race, ethnicity, gender, etc. Human trafficking puts those victimized in foreign countries to either be bought and sold into prostitution or forced labor. (Many other horrific kinds of trafficking too, of course)
